Six Steps to Becoming a Loser

June 19

(Ephesians 4:16-19 NIV) "From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. {17} So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. {18} They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. {19} Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more."

(Proverbs 4:23-27 NIV) "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. {24} Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. {25} Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. {26} Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. {27} Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil."

In sports, losing hardly ever happens by accident. There are reasons for every loss. The same truth applies to our spiritual life. Here are six steps to becoming a spiritual loser. The first is lack of teamwork. When team mates don’t support one another, love one another, and do their part, the team loses. Second, “futile thinking”, known in 12 Step circles as “stinkin’ thinkin’”. We fill our minds with bad stuff and it putrefies. Third comes a “hardened heart”. Broken and wounded hearts often become calloused. Fourth -- a “loss of sensitivity”. We stop feeling and develop a "seared conscience". Fifth, we give ourselves over to sensuality. We indulge ourselves in impurity and normalize sin. Sixth, we develop “a continual lust for more”. We become addicted to stuff. This is self-indulgence on steroids. Do these six things on a regular basis and you can become a great loser. -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
