God's Top 10 List - Knowing the Commander

July 9

(Exodus 20:1-2 NIV) "And God spoke all these words: {2} "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery."

(Matthew 5:17-19 NIV) "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. {18} I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. {19} Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

(1 John 5:3 NIV) "This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,"

(2 John 1:6 NIV) "And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love."

Aside from the gospel of grace, the Ten Commandments may be the most important words in Scripture. God gives us a simple ten point plan for living together with Him, our neighbors, and ourselves. If everyone followed this plan, it would literally transform the world. You could call them God’s Top 10 list. They are actually theological statements -- they tell us about God. And because God is eternal and unchanging, they are eternal and unchanging. They also tell us about ourselves -- about who we should be, and what we should do. For every “do not”, there is a corresponding “do”. To live out the Commandments, we need to know the Commander. In fact, knowing the Commander is even more important than knowing the Commandments.
