The Fifth Commandment - With All Due Respect

July 15

(Exodus 20:12 NIV) "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."

(Proverbs 6:20 NIV) "My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching."

(Proverbs 23:22 NIV) "Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old."

(1 Timothy 5:8 NIV) "If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

God’s Commandment to “Honor your father and mother” comes with a stated benefit -- "So that you may live long in the land". Blessing will come when we obey this Commandment. Parents are so important! The family is one of God's primary institutions for the betterment of mankind. When families are dysfunctional and weak, chaos and disorder gain strength. Our mental image of God is often influenced more by our parents than by Scripture. Parents, if we desire honor, we must behave honorably. After we become adults, honoring our parents means something different than obedience. At this stage of life, "honor" means loving care. The time when we are responsible to obey our parents will have come to an end -- but the time for honoring our parents never ends. So with all due respect, honor your father and mother. -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
