The First Commandment - Get Out of My Face

July 10

(Exodus 20:1-3 NIV) "And God spoke all these words: {2} "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. {3} "You shall have no other gods before me."

(Deuteronomy 6:5 NIV) "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."

People often say, “We don’t need church, we just go by the Ten Commandments.” But the truth is, we can’t even get by the first one -- "You shall have no other gods before me."  It sounds simple - God doesn't want other gods to come ahead of Him, or be more important than Him. But it’s more than that. God doesn’t just want to be our number one God… He wants to be our only God. The Lord is not saying, "You can have other gods as long as I am your favorite." He is saying, “You are not to have any other gods at all. None! So get your other gods out of my face." The first commandment is not about superiority, it is about exclusivity. We are commanded to eliminate all other competitors, and to love the Lord with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. This can prove to be difficult, but keep at it. Keep eliminating the competition. -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
