The Ninth Commandment - Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

July 19

(Exodus 20:16 NIV) ""You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor."

(Proverbs 6:16-19 NIV) "There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: {17} haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, {18} a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, {19} a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers."

(John 8:44 NIV) "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

(1 Samuel 15:29 NIV) "He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind.""

We have become a nation of liars. Exaggeration, half truth, slander, deceptive advertising, and innuendo have become normal practice for many politicians, journalists, corporate leaders, educational leaders, and religious leaders. We have perfected the art of deception. We lie when we say untrue things (and “half true” things) in an insincere or harmful way. We lie when we infer something bad about another person without actually saying it. We lie when we create false impressions about people or situations. A half truth is a half lie, and in God's eyes there is no such thing as a “half lie”, just like there is no such thing as a “half sin”. False testimony can be given in what we say when we shouldn’t, or in what we don’t say when we should. Lord, may Truth come to live in us, and rule in our lives. -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
