The Seventh Commandment - Adultery: High Cost Pleasure

July 17

(Genesis 2:24 NIV) "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."

(Exodus 20:14 NIV) "You shall not commit adultery."

(Proverbs 6:28-29 NIV) "Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? {29} So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished."

(Malachi 2:14-15 NIV) "You ask, "Why?" It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. {15} Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth."

(Matthew 5:27 NIV) ""You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'"

(Hebrews 13:4 NIV) "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral."

Before marriage became a legal commitment regulated by the state, it was a spiritual commitment, regulated by God -- a covenant between a man and a woman and the Lord. Without God, marriage loses its heart and becomes just another contract to be litigated when broken. Without God, there is no basis for saying adultery is wrong, for it is God who calls for faithfulness in marriage. God's plan is one man and one woman, committed physically, emotionally, and spiritually, for the duration of their lives. Frankly, if adultery were a business deal, none of us would seriously consider it. The cost-to-benefit ratio is just too high. The chance for profit is slim to none. The pleasure lasts for a moment. The sorrow and the regret last for a lifetime. Avoid this transaction at all costs! -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
