Watch Where You Walk

January 1

(Psalm 1 NIV) “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. {2} But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. {3} He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf  does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. {4} Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. {5} Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. {6} For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

As we walk through this New Year, it will be important whose directions we follow. If we get our counsel from the wicked and the ungodly, we can eventually end up in hellish places. When we stand with sinners, imitating them instead of Jesus, we have stopped walking with God. When we sit down with mockers who demean God, we are in danger, for God says He will not be mocked. In the end, we never really “fall” into sin. Instead, we walk in it, stand in it, and sit in it. It’s like the old saying that falling into water never drowned anyone - it’s staying under the water that does it. If we get our directions from ungodly sources, we will be blown away like chaff and will not stand with the righteous at judgment. But if we walk with the godly, we will not wither. We will bear fruit and our lives can flourish. The choice sounds pretty simple. -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
