Calling With All My Heart

October 31

(Psalm 119:143-149 NIV) “Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. {144} Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live. {145} I call with all my heart; answer me, O Lord, and I will obey your decrees. {146} I call out to you; save me and I will keep your statutes. {147} I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word. {148} My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises. {149} Hear my voice in accordance with your love; preserve my life, O Lord, according to your laws.”

(Proverbs 2:1-5 NIV) “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, {2} turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, {3} and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, {4} and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, {5} then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

Sometimes we cry out to God for help, but it is a half-hearted plea -- half-hearted because the other half of our heart continues to cling to the very stuff that led us into “trouble and distress”. The man who cries whole-heartedly for help is ready to surrender everything for salvation. Nothing is held back. Our ears are open to God’s wisdom. Our eyes are open to God’s understanding. Our hearts are open to honoring God’s decrees. Our days of seeking other lovers are over. All our hope has been placed in the name of the Lord. We allow no other competing gods in our life. They have been vanquished to the land of imposters and “also-rans”. We are trusting exclusively in the Lord Jesus Christ to save us and preserve our life. Are you there yet? You could be. All it takes is a decision today... and another tomorrow… and another the next day. Call out to God with all your heart. -- Friar Tuck’s Word of the Day
